  1. Tablet (Touch UI) Support

Right now it is not possible to open files for editing from the navigation frame by touch gestures in any browser for iPad or Galaxy tablets. This is a big roadblock to using a tablet for development and perhaps the only show stopper from getting this IDE immensely popular as a true cloud IDE that is cross device.

Something similar to a touch double click support to open files for editing as we expand the navigation tree, can be a simple enhancement that can go a long way.

Hi Everyone: We have tested Codenvy with the Puffin Web Browser on Android and Ipad, and it works in most scenarios. They provide a track pad that allows for right click of objects and the display is quite good.

          • Add Dropbox Integration

It would be fantastic to have integration with Dropbox as a data store.

For me, this would provide the convenience of being able to edit code from my Linux workstation and my Android tablet, where Dropbox is well-supported on both, but Git is barely functional on the latter.

This could also be beneficial to those who use Dropbox as a simple hosting platform (for static content), and could leverage the range of apps that integrate with Dropbox to do useful things (ifttt.com has some interesting examples of coupling Dropbox with other services).

Codenvy has added a complete Terminal into your running container with Root access. However, it isn’t currently possible to use SSH to access your workspace.

                • Better GIT GUI

Honestly, I can't figure out how to use Codenvy's menu-based git implementation. I guess I'm spoiled using Tower, and being able to actually see the git repo that lives on each environment. I use Heroku, so git push is how I update my github repo, and deploy to stage and prod.

The main thing I do before I push to say, the stage remote (in order to deploy to it), is look at the commit history on stage, look at the commit history on my local repo, and do a basic visual comparison to make sure I know exactly what's…

Thank you, Erik for the thoughtful writeup and the visuals to emphasize the capabilities. We are undertaking a bit of a UI refresh with Codenvy and the git plug-in is getting updated. I think we can incorporate some of these enhancements. We need to give some thought around how to show commit histories and full listing of all remotes that you have access to.

                      • Let users change how many spaces in a tab.

Some people prefer 2 spaces per tab, some prefer 4, so an option to change this would be useful.

Yes, I think this is a killer idea. This fits well with some thoughts that we are having about publishing streams of events off of your project or workspace. This will allow other tools, such as FlowDock, to subscribe to the event stream, which also gives you a notification.

                              • real time update web sources

Each time I update a source file I must restart the app to review the changes, which is a very bad experience that only Java programmers suffer without Codenvy.

This is a huge pull factor that discourages people from using this neat web IDE.

If the sources of a project dependency are available, we should be able to view them in the editor in read only mode.
Eclipse does this with the F3 button. IntelliJ IDEA does even better (with F4) by creating a stub file that contains all method signatures (with an empty body) if the source are not available.

                                    • Class/method navigation in Java editor using F3, like Eclipse

Currently to navite to a class from the current one, I have to select the class name, Ctrl-C, Ctrl-St-R, click on the class, that is I seem a jazz pianist. With Eclipse I just press F3.
Moreover, navigating to a method is not allowed.

                                      • Multiple Projects in the project explorer

I feel that you should allow there to be multiple projects open in the project explorer so that you can easily go back and forth between projects

                                        • Support for running local commands for code generation

The ability to be able to setup local commands/scripts to generate code or otherwise manipulate the project. For a Rails app it would mean having the ability to run rails and rake commands. If shell access is not an option then being able to setup simple commands to run like runner scripts would be great.

We are working on bi-directional editing within runners / builders, and this will provide the ability to do local commands in a runner that does code generation. We don’t have an ETA, but are hoping Q1 of 2015. We have 3 engineers on this full time now.
